Mrityunjaya homam
Mrityunjaya homam is performed for health and length of life: during a serious illness, before a surgery, after an accident, or at a birthday and the shashtipoorthi. The Maha Mrityunjaya mantra is recited to the count the family keeps, and the homam and the abhishekam follow.
The mantra is the one families turn to when someone is ill, and it is the karyam we are asked for most at short notice. The count is usually 1,008 or 11,000, with more purohits for the larger counts so that it is completed in one sitting. A Rudrabhishekam is often kept with it in the same morning.
Where a family calls us from a hospital, we perform it at home in the patient’s name; the person need not be present. Tell us the name, the nakshatram and the gotram, and the sankalpam is made for them.
No prices are listed here. Each karyam is quoted on the phone, once we know the date, the place and the custom your family follows.
Questions about this karyam
Must the person be present?
No. Where someone is in hospital or abroad, the homam is performed in their name with their nakshatram and gotram in the sankalpam.
How long does it take?
About three hours at 1,008. At 11,000, most of a day, with several purohits reciting together.
Is the abhishekam done as well?
Most families keep the Rudrabhishekam with it, and it makes for one complete morning. It can also be done on its own.
Can the family sit through the whole japam?
They may, and many do, but it is not required. What matters is that the karta sits for the sankalpam and is there for the poornahuti. For a long count the family comes and goes; the purohits carry the recitation, and nobody should be worn out by the end of a homam meant to give strength.
