Mundan sanskar
Mundan Sanskar is the child’s first tonsure, one of the sixteen sanskaras, performed in the first, third or fifth year. The pandit performs the Ganesh puja and the havan, the first lock is cut at the muhurat, and the hair is offered at a river or a temple as the family keeps it.
The muhurat is fixed from the child’s birth details, and the months and nakshatras that are avoided are avoided. Give us the birth date, time and place, and we will give you the days.
Families in Hyderabad keep it at home, at the family temple, or at Tirupati and other kshetrams where they have vowed it. Where you are taking the child to a kshetram, we perform the havan and the sankalp at home beforehand so that the vow is fulfilled properly at the kshetram itself.

At what age?

Can it be done at Tirupati?
Yes, and many families vow it there. We perform the havan and the sankalp at home first so that what is done at the kshetram completes the vow.

What is done with the hair?
It is gathered and offered at a river or at the temple where the family has vowed it, not thrown away. Where you are going to a kshetram later, we wrap and give it to you to carry. Families in Hyderabad most often offer it in the Musi at a ghat, or take it to Tirupati with the child.
