Nitya karmalu
Nitya karmalu are the daily karmas performed at home from the first day to the tenth, a pindam and an offering of water for the preta each day. We arrange the place and the samagri, show the karta how it is done, and either leave him to it or come each day, as the family prefers.
These ten days hold the karma together. A small place is kept in the house, and each day the karta offers a pindam and jalam with darbha and til. It takes a few minutes, but the days must not be skipped: the ten pindas made across them are what the dasa dina karma completes.
Most families in Hyderabad do it themselves after we set it up and show the karta once. Where the karta is elderly, unwell or away, our purohit comes each day instead. Either way we bring the samagri for all ten days at the start, so nothing has to be bought while the house is in mourning.
No prices are listed here. Each karyam is quoted on the phone, once we know the date, the place and the custom your family follows.
Questions about this karyam
Must the karta do it himself every day?
It is better that he does, and most do. Where he cannot, our purohit performs it in his presence or on his behalf; the karma is not lost.
What if a day is missed?
Tell us. There is a way to make it good within the ten days, and the purohit will fold it in rather than leave a gap.
Can it be done in a flat?
Yes. A corner of the balcony or a washed patch of floor is enough. We show you where and how.
Are the women of the house part of it?
The pindam is offered by the karta. The women of the house keep the lamp, the water and the place clean through the ten days, and are present at the offering. Where a family has no son and a daughter is performing the karma, she offers the pindam herself, and we perform it that way without hesitation.
